How to create safer passwords

We’ve all heard time and time again to choose unique, complex passwords for each online account and that this is imperative to internet safety but how do you remember all those passwords?

We have a tried and tested way to create complex passwords that will be almost impossible for anyone to crack. Now if only we were all blessed with a photographic memory, there are so many passwords for so many accounts these days online banking, utility providers, social networking sites, your favourite shopping sites the list goes on. No need to despair just yet, we also have a cleaver way to remember passwords which will also curve the need for entering it in your address book disguised in your best attempt at code writing.

So here are the basics. Your password should be as long as possible 14 characters where ever possible and use the entire keyboard the greater variety of characters the better!

  • Begin with a sentence or two 10 words in total and choose a sentence that is meaningful to you or that you can associate to the site you are using. This will help you remember. ‘Choosing a password is simple. But mine is a secret’
  • Turn the sentence into a string of letters, using the first letter of each word. capisbmias (10 characters)
  • Add complexity make only the letters in the first half of the alphabet capitals CApIsBMIAs
  • Add to the length with numbers, choose number that mean something to you and add them in between the two sentences CApIs06BMIAs
  • Add to the length with punctuation or symbols adding them at the beginning and end of the password @CApIs06BMIAs!

Using a method such as this can simplify the daunting process of choosing different passwords for all of your online accounts. Try to change them as often as possible and never disclose your passwords to anyone.
